Xanax Addiction

Xanax Addiction is part of the prescription drug addiction epidemic that is plaguing this country in a serious way. According the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 48 million people (20 percent of the US population), age 12 or older have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons during their lifetime, which includes Xanax. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax have been identified as being amont the most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in the country, which is why Xanax addiction has become such a problem.

In the field of Drug Addiction Treatment, there has been a large increase in the number of patients that are being admitted for prescription drugs and Xanax addiction.  Prescription drugs are now becoming a patient’s primary drug of choice, rather than just being a secondary choice of abuse and dependency One need only be aware of the increase in use of the FDA black box warning and the recent press revolving around the serious and often life threatening side effects of some of these prescribed medications, including Xanax, to know that a new demon has reared its ugly head in the field of drug addiction treatment.

Xanax is a tranquilizer used for short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety or the treatment of anxiety disorders. Xanax addiction can easily occur since a person tolerance for this drug rapidly increases with its use, therefore a person needs to take more and more Xanax to get the desired effect. If a person tries to stop using Xanax, or reduces the dosage too quickly, withdrawal symptoms will occur. In fact, withdrawal from Xanax addiction can be life threatening and should be monitored closely (medical detoxification is recommended in many cases).

Xanax Addiction is Two Problems, Not Just One

Xanax Addiction may be a physical and/or an emotional dependence, but it is not some mysterious brain disease. Similar to other addictions, a person suffering from Xanax addiction is using Xanax to solve some perceived problem or problems in his or her life. The continued use of Xanax to combat these perceived problems is what leads to Xanax addiction. Xanax are often continued to be taken even after the original problem is gone. Eventually, Xanax addiction itself becomes an even greater problem than the original problem or problems that Xanax was supposed to solve.

The result is that now the person has two problems:
  • The original underlying problem(s), possibly now forgotten
  • The new problem-- Xanax Addiction.

Successful Xanax Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Solves Both Problems

Many people think that people with a Xanax addiction problem lack self-control or self-discipline, and that simply getting them somehow to stop using Xanax will solve their Xanaxl addiction problem. In fact, quitting Xanax is only one of the problems. The person became an addict to solve some other problem or problems. Correctly easing the person off of Xanax is of course a necessary step, but that solves only one of the problems, and by itself can often be at best a temporary solution.

Helping the person with the Xanax addiction problem to discover or rediscover the original problem or problems and to overcome these with real-life solutions is an essential component of almost all successful Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Centers. By equipping a person who has a Xanax addiction problem with tools and life skills to confront and handle common obstacles encountered in life, at home, on the job, etc. on a daily basis is integral to beating addiction in the long term!
